George Edward “Eddie” Pope

Eddie PopeEddie grew up in High Point where he learned to play soccer, and the sport has taken him around the world. He was a collegiate All-America at UNC Chapel Hill, and the second player selected in the first-ever Major League Soccer draft in 1997 (by D.C. United). He has become a fixture on the U.S. Men’s National Team, and has played in two World Cups, and is a strong candidate to make the 2006 U.S. World Cup team. He was named U.S. Soccer’s Honda Player of the Year in 1997. Currently playing in MLS with Real Salt Lake, Pope was traded to the NY/NJ MetroStars by D.C. United. His Eddie Pope Foundation provides opportunities for children with special challenges with programs in High Point, New Bern and Washington, DC.
